Exploring Oban

There are many facets to Oban. As the gateway to the Isles, Oban harbour is home to commercial ferries, fishing vessels, tourist boats and private yachts. Enjoy the bustle of the harbour, watch the fishing boats unload their daily catch and savour fresh seafood at one of the stalls. Walk up to Pulpit Hill or McCaig’s Tower for a different view and perspective, or venture to the north to visit historic Dunollie Castle and the sandy beach of Ganavan. Dunstaffnage Castle and the Ocean Explorer’s Centre are within a short distance, and do not forget to drop by the Oban Distillery, established a few years after the Manor House was built. For more active adventures, you will find plenty of tours and activities that depart from town.

On our doorstep

These excursions are within a short distance of Oban and take a maximum of half a day to discover. Loch Etive is just around the corner, the Isle of Kerrera is a five-minute ferry ride away and you can reach Loch Awe by car or train in less than one hour. Of course, you can also make your excursion a full day by combining activities – we promise you it is time well spent! You will find famous castles and heritage sites, enchanting gardens and golf courses, scenic hiking and biking trails and exciting boat trips that take you to discover Scotland’s nature, wildlife and heritage.

A little further afield

Are you looking for day trips? Oban is the perfect base to explore the best of Argyll and the Isles. Experience the picturesque and ever-changing landscape of the Isle of Mull, a 45-minute ferry ride away. You may want to explore the Crinan Canal to the south or go north to visit mystical Glen Coe. Or why not taking a ride on the historical Jacobite train and drive over the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. Venturing out to Staffa and Iona to experience puffins and visiting Iona Abbey and Fingal’s Cave are a must if time allows.
